Binalong Bay Eco hut.

This was Designful’s first complete project! It’s kind of where it all began. The brief was for a low impact, off grid hut for family and friends to use as a base for exploring the East Coast of Tasmania and a place for the simple life, for rest and rejuvenation. The hut is small, well insulated and double glazed. It is off grid and the few lights, gas fridge and hot water are powered by a small solar and battery system.

It is clad in fire resistant Weathertex and lined with ply. There is no TV, no wi-fi, no fancy bathroom, it’s just one room but there is a separate dunny out the back, an outdoor shower on deck, gas fridge, wood fire, small gas cook top, bush views, bird song, and all the basic essentials for time away from it all. This little hut has a very calm and quiet vibe.

The structure is a simple rectangle, some of which is ‘inside’ some outside. One room is subtly divided into a sleeping nook, kitchen space, storage, extra sleeping space and lounging around area. The split level, working with the contours of the site allows for bonus storage under floor joists, this houses extra mattresses and doubles as a seat.

It welcomes the outside in and provides a space of ‘enoughness’ to go outside into the wild.
