Beaumaris Ocean + Earth House

The Ocean + Earth House in Beaumaris is one of our favourites. With a refined natural material + colour palette that responds to the surroundings to create calm + cohesive spaces, it’s the perfect surf pad, with the most epic view, and maximum space (over two levels) squeezed into a very compact footprint.⁣

With 2 storeys to catch the views (and check the swell), 4 bedrooms, 2 living spaces, 1 full bathroom, and 1 bath/laundry combo, we even surprised ourselves with the relatively small footprint! Coming in at 160m2 of floor area (+30m2 of rammed earth walls), this home is evidence that you can fit all you need in a small-ish home if you are prepared to compromise and settle for ‘enough’. (In a home that looks + feels this good, you wouldn’t feel like you were settling.)

Both floors have ample cross ventilation + protected outdoor spaces on both sides. The design creates multiple outdoor pockets to allow outdoor living in all weather conditions.

Owner-built by Chris from Rammed Earth Tasmania, featuring Spotted Gum cladding + windows, concrete thermal mass ground floor and timber framed upper floor, using local earth for the walls.

The round ‘window’ is just for fun – fun and play is important!

A note on owner-building: This is becoming increasingly hard to do. We support those that have the capacity and skill to owner-build. This is a big undertaking and should be considered very carefully.

A humble renovation to respond to our clients' lifestyle, which largely revolves around doing things in the garden, tending to bees and pets, and following the sun for daily reflection.
