Neika House

This cosy and compact new home nestled in the foothills of kunanyi was built for a young and busy family of four, designed to meet their needs now and into the future.

The brief called for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, family home that would keep everyone warm and cosy, and provide space for being together while appreciating the scenic surroundings right outside the door. Most importantly: it also needed to stick to a budget!

The home was designed to make the most of the passive solar gain in a cool climate. It was positioned to allow northern sunshine to penetrate as many rooms as possible, while also allowing connection to the outdoors to ensure the kids get outside in the sunshine (and sometimes: the snow!). The living and rumpus space are directly connected to outdoor spaces and it is easy to see the kids playing outside from the kitchen. Windows create view lines from all areas of the home to the outside, creating a sense of space and calm.

The colour palette is inspired by the surrounding bush, and the materials are low maintenance and robust: recycled brick, silver top ash timber and Colorbond with burnished concrete floors for thermal mass internally.

The footprint of this home is compact but it fits so much in! Open plan living, dining and kitchen + walk in pantry. 2 compact kids room + rumpus space. Main bedroom + ensuite + walk-in robe. Main bathroom, mudroom and separate toilet plus a flexible loft space and outdoor bath! All fitting into 166m2.

Built by Oak Construction.
