West Hobart Extension

Previously a very compact home, this extension in the treetops of West Hobart accommodates a family of 6, with 4 primary school aged children! The brief was to create spaces to provide some privacy for quiet activities but keep the family close and connected. The steep site was the greatest challenge, but such a great setting (up in the branches with the birds) called for a creative way to connect spaces and access the outside.

We integrated vertical and horizontal sight lines throughout the home from the old to the new and then outside to allow parents a view of children playing. The parents’ room makes the most of the lovely trees – you feel like you’re in a tree house. The building employs materials that are simple and low maintenance – because who has time for painting!

This calm, bright, light filled home consists of sunny spaces, just enough space, and makes the most of the good views / surrounding environment, equalling one very happy family!
